Course selection
In China, the courses students take during their four years at university are almost always pre-arranged. Students of the same major all take the same courses, with few exceptions. In the United States, at the beginning of each semester (or the end of the previous semester), students are given a list of courses and must choose their own courses. At smaller schools, students can choose from as many as 2,000 courses per semester, while larger schools may have as many as 10,000.
Usually, a major has a specified number of credits, and the required credits can be obtained by taking a number of different courses. In addition, most American schools require students to take a large number of courses outside their major in order to give students a more well-rounded education. Although the American way of education sounds very open, it also requires students to take primary responsibility for the content, scope, and timing of their education.
Study group
In China, most grades are determined mainly by individual efforts, such as exam results. In the United States, grades in many courses often depend on collaboration among students, especially in business and engineering courses favored by Chinese students. This requires students to learn to work effectively in teams with others, especially when group members vary in skill and effort.
Extracurricular activities
Chinese schools pay special attention to academics. Students have a lot of homework and little time for extracurricular activities, which is quite different in the United States, where extracurricular activities are an important part of school education. Typically, students are expected to participate in at least one major activity, such as participating in the school drama club, school sports team, editing the school newspaper, or doing community service.
American workplaces and graduate schools pay special attention to students' extracurricular activities. If two students have the same academic record, the one who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in extracurricular activities is more likely to be admitted.
